Legal Hallmarks of Portuguese Assay Offices
All jewellery items sold in Portugal must bear the legal hallmarks provided for in Law No. 98/2015 of 18 August and Decree No. 2/2006 of 3 January. Legal hallmarks include the responsibility mark (or maker's mark) and the assay office mark, which guarantee the authenticity and fineness of the precious metal.
New Assay Hallmarks
Since 1 January 2021, new assay hallmarks have been in effect for precious metals. Each metal is identified by a specific animal:
- Platinum — Hummingbird head
- Gold — Ram's head
- Silver — Rabbit's head
The orientation of the head (left or right) indicates the fineness level of the metal. Items made from recycled precious metal receive a goldfinch mark, and items from an unknown manufacturer receive an owl mark.
Common Control Marks (Convention)
Common Control Marks (CCM) are internationally recognised under the Vienna Convention. Each mark is composed of a balance, the fineness number in millesimal and the outline identifying the precious metal.
